Sequential Acral Lentiginous Melanomas of the Foot

چکیده
A 64-year-old Japanese woman had a lightly brown-blackish pigmented macule (1.2 cm in diameter) on the left sole of her foot. She received surgical excision following a diagnosis of acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM), which was confirmed histopathologically. One month after the operation, a second melanoma lesion was noticed adjacent to the grafted site. Histopathologically, the two lesions had no continuity, but HMB-45 and cyclin D(1) double-positive cells were detected not only on aggregates of atypical melanocytes but also on single cells near the cutting edge of the first lesion. The unique occurrence of a sequential lesion of a primary melanoma might be caused by stimulated subclinical field cells during the wound healing process following the initial operation. This case warrants further investigation to establish the appropriate surgical margin of ALM lesions.

Multiple Primary Acral Lentiginous Melanomas (MPALM)
We present a rare case of a patient with multiple primary acral lentiginous melanomas of the foot. We would like to highlight the importance of whole-skin examination in all patients, even by the general practitioners, aiming the maximal early detection of acral lentiginous melanomas, considering their rapid progression, early metastatic spread and extremely poor prognosis. It can be extrapolat...
متن کاملAcral lentiginous melanoma: A case and literature review
utaneous foot melanoma is rare; it accounts for approximately 1% of all cutaneous melanoma and can be challenging to manage [1]. There are four main variants of cutaneous malignant melanomas (CMMs), superficial spreading melanoma (SSM), lentigo malignant melanoma (LMM), nodular melanoma (NM) and acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM). Superficial spreading melanoma accounts for approximately 65% of a...
متن کاملMalignant melanoma of the heel.
Primary cutaneous melanomas are usually divided into three separate clinicopathologic groups: lentigo maligna melanoma (LMM), superficial spreading melanoma. (SSM), and nodular melanoma (NM). Acral lentiginous melanoma has been described as the fourth distinct subtype to denote those melanomas that arise on volar and subungual skin. This entity is said to have a radial growth phase histological...
متن کاملRF-Acral Melanoma and Repetitive Injury to the Sole of the Foot.
Although exposure to the sun is recognized as the principal factor in the genesis of melanoma, this tumor also arises in areas of the skin not generally exposed to the sun, as is the case in acral lentiginous melanoma of the sole, in which the role of UV radiation would appear insignificant. Acral melanomas account for 2% of all melanomas (1.5% for plantar acral melanoma), with an incidence of ...
متن کاملClinicopathological features and prognosis of patients with de novo versus nevus-associated melanoma in Taiwan
Studies surveying melanomas associated with melanocytic nevi in Asia are rare. In this study, we examined whether nevus-associated melanomas differ from de novo melanomas in terms of their associations with clinical factors, histologic characteristics, and patient survival in Taiwan. Using data on cancer cases obtained from the Department of Pathology archives and the Cancer Registry of Nationa...
